The Infrastructure Engineer job description:

  • Uses software, hardware and network tools to create effective solutions and systems for businesses.
  • From business requests, assists in the design and implementation of tangible products/systems.
  • Adheres to both internal company standards and external industry requirements.
  • Typical projects an Infrastructure Engineer would be required to carry out are product installations, decommissions, technology evaluations/lab testing, system upgrades and migrations.


Skills an Infrastructure Engineer may have are:

  • An engineering qualification.
  • Specific industry qualifications/product qualifications (e.g. Cisco, Windows, Unix).
  • Will usually be familiar with a range of design packages such as AutoCAD, MicroDrainage and MX.

There are two main types of Infrastructure Engineer:

Hardware Engineer

  • Researches, designs, develops and tests an application or system’s hardware. Oversees the manufacturing and installation of new hardware.
  • Needs to maintain an advantage in the industry so continuously improves their products, whilst providing hardware that is robust and user friendly.
  • Analyses information to determine, recommend and plan system layouts including types of computers and equipment modifications.
  • Analyses user needs and recommends appropriate hardware.
  • Builds, tests and modifies products using working models or theoretical models.


Skills a Hardware Engineer may have are:

  • Strong technical knowledge of operating systems (Unix/Windows), hardware vendors (HP, IBM, Dell) and database technologies (SQL Server, Oracle, Sybase).

Network Engineer

  • Maintains and installs communication networks for businesses and between businesses - this can include data, voice and video technologies.
  • Plans and implements local and wide area networks (LANs and WANs) which requires a strong knowledge of both hardware and software.
  • Ensures users receive the highest levels of network performance and support.


Skills a Network Engineer may have are
:

  • Cisco switches and routers
  • TCP/IP
  • Firewall technologies
  • HP/Compaq servers, Dell servers and Sun servers
  • Market data feeds and telecoms
