As the IT profession is very broad, there are many different options to consider when choosing a career in IT.

Project Manager: Also known as PM

The Project Manager job description:

  • Delivers and organises projects including project planning, project progression, project delivery and ensures that the projects are completed within a set timeline, to cost and to standard.
  • Focuses on the organisation of a project whilst also concentrating on the needs of the client or business users.
  • Implements solutions that meet the requirements, specifications and customer expectations.
  • Provides input into high-level design, evaluates technologies and develops prototypes where appropriate to validate potential solutions and to mitigate development risks.
  • Ensures that development, testing and implementation meet agreed quality goals.
  • Ensures that the system is implemented on a technical platform that is capable of supporting a business-critical system.


Skills a Project Manager may have are:

  • Strong technical knowledge as well as strong leadership skills.
  • Familiarity with budgeting and project scoping.
  • Knowledge of stakeholder management/architecture/appraisals/team management.
  • Project management methodology certification.
  • Awareness of quality standards such as ISO 9001, Six-Sigma, TL9000 and professional guides – ITIL (information technology infrastructure library), CoBIT (control objectives for information and related technology).
  • May also be CRAMM (CCTA risk analysis and method management) certified.
