Saturday 4th February 2012

Women in Technology sponsored the category for "Outstanding Contribution by a Female in Financial Technology" at the Banking Technology Awards 2011 for the fifth time!

The 2011 Banking Technology Awards took place on Thursday 10th November 2011 at the Grand Connaught Rooms, Great Queen Street, London.

Outstanding Contribution by a Female in Financial Technology Award

This is a unique award within the IT banking community and celebrates the ever increasing role of female technologists, programme/project managers and strategic implementers of change. Financial institutions are increasingly dependent on technology and on having a diverse, creative and committed pool of people to deliver outstanding performance to their clients. Women are at the very forefront of that new and multi-talented breed of technically minded financial professionals who are innovating, creating and delivering complex business solutions using technology.

Ruth Brennan - 2011 Winner

The winner of the 2011 award has been recognised by her colleagues at HSBC as an inspirational leader and mentor to hundreds of friends and colleagues as she headed technology teams in its investment banking operations worldwide.

As one of the most senior Irish women on the international financial scene and during a 20-year career with HSBC, Ruth Brennan's ascent was inexorable. She took on a number of global roles and in her last job, as part of the top management team in HSBC Mexico, she was chief technology and services officer - a role that was one of her favourites.

She was the first woman to reach the upper management tier in the bank in Mexico and she actively encouraged other women to follow in her footsteps. This, and many other testaments, represent all of the attributes that we look for in the Outstanding Contribution by a Female in Financial Technology award.

Sadly while participating in an activity she loved, Ruth was killed in a motorbike accident in August this year. Colleagues from around the world travelled to join her family in Ireland for her funeral. On the night, her brothers Paul and Ian accepted the award for Ruth so that we could celebrate the contribution she made to the banking IT community.
