10 tips for job interview success

10 tips for job interview success

As a professional working woman, I have had my fair share of interviews. Over the years I have learnt some very helpful tips that I have found invaluable in interviews throughout my career. Below are my top ten tips to give you the best possible chance of landing that dream job…

1. Appearance

They say first impressions count and it is certainly true in an interview. With this in mind, always welcome your interviewer with a polite smile and a strong handshake. Remember to always give eye contact and appear keen.

2. Preparation, Preparation, Preparation

Know your CV and the job you are applying for like the back of your hand. Research the company web site and understand the role you are applying for.

3. Speak Clearly
Never waffle. Assert yourself and come across as confident, knowledgeable and well spoken. When asked a question, take your time and think before you speak.

4. Believe In Yourself
A job advert will regularly advertise the required qualities of an employee. Being a good team worker or a good communicator is vital, so it's down to you to show examples of how to demonstrate these skills.

5. Positivity Is key

Remember, your interviewer will want to assess whether you are a team player and can benefit the company. Be positive and upbeat about your visions for the company.

6. Body Language

How you present yourself at an interview is so important! Remember to unfold your arms, uncross your legs and sit up straight!

7. Prepare For The Unexpected

No matter how hard you prepare for interview questions, it’s almost impossible to know the answer to every single one.  If you’re ever unsure about an interview question, simply ask the interviewer to repeat the question if possible, but never evade it.

8. Show Your Sense Of Humour

Show the interviewer you personality, energy, sense of humour and smile. Turn the tables around and ask your interviewer questions about themselves and the business.

9. Presentation

Make sure your hair is washed and brushed, wear professional attire and in no circumstance should you ever wear jewellery or chew gum!

10.  Remember Your Manners

Politely tell the interviewer why you would like to join the company. Ask them for a business card and send a "thank-you" e-mail explaining how much you enjoyed meeting them and your interest in the job role.
