Can women have it all?

Women in business
According to an
article I read in the Telegraph
recently, women have to accept that they can progress in their careers and excel in their roles as mothers – just not at the same time! This is the view of actress Emma Thompson.
Emma Thompson, who starred as child minder Nanny McPhee in the popular children's films, believes that only those women who employ outside help can truly be a mother and have a full time career. So is this true? Can women seeking to stay in full time employment following a child only succeed with their careers if they have the ability to pay for help? Surely not all couples have the luxury of being able to balance their working lives around their children, and what’s more not all couples have the finances to do so. There has been plenty of research over the last few months on the cost of child care for families seeking to stay in full time employment whilst their children are of school age.
All working mums accept that compromises have to made but as more and more couples are now sharing the responsibility of child care it is not necessarily true to say that you cannot have a successful career and truly be a mother at the same time.
What do you think and what has your experience been?

As a single mother and business owner, outside child-care has been the only way for me to manage. As my children get older and begin afterschool activities, a nanny is becoming more necessary. However, managing the cost will be a study in creative budgeting.

It depends on the attitude of your company. I have a reasonable boss who has children of his own, and reasonable company owners who definately are family oriented so balancing my job and home life has never been an issue, even if I have had to pay for child care at Nursery!! My previous company - a large faceless organisation would never have been so flexible
