Digital media teams raise an impressive £30,000 for charity

This year Women in Technology supported the CARE New Media Challenge, a multi-activity challenge for digital media professionals that took place in Cannock Chase in Staffordshire. Each participant covered a marathon by completing the 42km route which comprised a bike circuit, canoe relay and trail running section. Not only did the challenge test teams’ physical abilities, it also tested their mental abilities as participants were required to solve a few mystery puzzles along the way.

IT and Media professionals from the likes of big group, ComScore, Fujitsu, IAB, mso.net, RAC, Square Up Media, TAMBA Internet, Tangent Snowball and Tribal Fusion completed the exhilarating challenge.

“The only all-female team was from Fujitsu. They completed the challenge in 5 hours and 16 minutes competing against sixteen teams from various media firms. True to their team name – The Muddy Cupcakes - the team sold cupcakes and even used a cinema for a fundraising film event to reach their target of £1500.

The team said that the “fundraising and training for the challenge required team work but was very rewarding. We had a fantastic time on the challenge, it was hard work but lots of fun too! We are really pleased to have raised funds to support CARE International’s life-saving work. “

The event raised an impressive £30,000 for CARE, which works to help people find lasting routes out of poverty. Currently CARE is responding to the devastating food crisis that is affecting 12 million people in East Africa. The charity is providing emergency aid, including food and water, and by the end of August had reached more than 920,000 people. Women and children have been particularly hard hit by the crisis across the region, with women and children making up 80 per cent of the people fleeing Somalia.

Having worked in the region for over 25 years, CARE also works with communities to tackle the root causes of poverty that make people vulnerable to drought. This includes supporting drought resistant crop farming and helping people to find alternative livelihood sources. A video of CARE’s work in the region can be viewed by following this link.

Women In Technology proudly supports the challenge and would like thank everyone who took part. A special mention goes to the teams from MSO.net who were awarded the prize for highest fundraisers. Their amazing efforts over the last few months brought their fundraising total up to an astounding £6,000. A team from Tangent Snowball scooped the prize for fastest team by completing the challenge in an impressive 4 hours and 32 minutes, so congratulations to them for their fantastic performance.

The next challenge will take place in September 2012. To find out more information visit this link.
