Does Your CV Match Your Business Image?

Does Your CV Match Your Business Image?

“She looked too perfect..almost robotic so we rejected her candidacy after the 1st interview. She did not feel as if she could be one of us ” so spoke a well known female financial entrepreneur to us in a recent meeting about her recent experiences of hiring. This revealed an interesting downside risk in overperfecting one’s professional image.

Our presentation on Tuesday 31st January with Women in Technology aims to give practical guidance on this key elements of balancing one’s professional identity. Both CV and image are of course silent and visual indicators of self esteem. In the rush to manage our work and pressure of daily lives we sometimes we overlook that CV and professional image are actually two radio waves that are broadcast in parallel. The CV speaks to today and one’s track record and the professional image is contemporary and should be forward focused. Too scruffy ? Why should a future boss or employer care? Too perfect?  Is she able to manage the hard grit of office life? So this is a high wire act.

Dress is a great signaller of future ambition. Men seem to know this almost innately, particularly those with career history in the Armed Forces. Once you have attained one level (Captain, Major etc) you are being groomed or dressed for the next promotion. Uniform and related symbols all mirror that.

Here in the civilian world it is all much more nuanced and ambiguous and it is one area which women tend to overlook.  From our experience from City life and business coaching is that women have a natural handbrake which stifles their confidence in looking up to the next promotion level.  Some might call this imposter syndrome .

Reviewing one’s professional image is a good way of preparing for the next professional level and once you look the part, it is easier and more natural to step up that ladder... (although we women are always mindful that where there are ladders there can also be snakes dressed up in suits...).

So here is to plenty of career challenges in 2012, let's release the career handbrake and step on up with a crisp and powerful CV and a consistent business image that tells that story.

We look forward to meeting you on 31st January!
