Women in IT
Written by Lis Hubert.
As a UX Designer, one of the biggest surveys that we have going in our part of the tech ecosystem is conducted each year by
A List Apart
. The survey looks to record who makes up the people that create websites and has been going out for a fairly long time. The
2009 survey results
just came out and I thought they would be perfect to share here.
If you take a look at the results, the second section is dedicated to gender (note: the results are long, so if you are interested, take your time to read all the way through). When I opened the gender section, I was astounded that only 17.4% of the participants were female. This means that less than one fifth of the people responding are women... this is completely unbalanced!
Also, if you notice the area below entitled Job Title, you’ll see that the majority of respondents are developers. But also notice all the other titles of the website/tech world that are represented and that need to be filled. Writer/Editor, Information Architect, Creative Director, Art Director... the list goes on and on.
So there are a few points to make here. First, ladies we need more of us in the tech field. We have the interest, we have the knowledge and we have the will power... let’s take the plunge. Second, as I mentioned in another post
Seeing IT Through a Different Lens: User Experience
, being in the tech/IT world does NOT just mean being a developer. You can see that there are many different areas that we can contribute to and lead. So, if you love technology and you love helping to make it better then join us! Become another one of the women that are making a difference in the world by being a part of technology. So that next year, we can see that 17.4% be much, much higher.
