Proud to be a Woman in Tech

When I first saw the call for guest bloggers that Women in Technology put out some time ago, I wasn’t sure that I fit the bill. First of all, I never really looked at myself as a woman in any workforce. I’m just a professional person, that does the best work that I can do... it didn’t matter to me whether my femininity was noticed or not. Secondly, I didn’t really consider myself part of the tech community. As I don’t write code, or build software directly, it was hard for me to identify with that role.
After reading several posts from women that have similar thoughts and feelings, I thought it was both comforting that we all felt the same way, but also very debilitating. Debilitating to women in the tech community, and to those that want to become a part of this community, because we’re not really providing a sense of community. We are just people who happen to fit the tech requirements that happen to be women, but we don’t own in and internalise it and that causes a huge gap in creating a real community for women in tech.
So, from here on out I’m going to be proud to call myself a woman in tech. I’m going to voice it to the world, and make sure I’m heard. What do you have to do to call yourself a woman in tech? Well first be a woman... easy to figure out. Second find yourself working somewhere in the tech realm, be it in the creative piece, the coding piece, or whatever piece. If this is you, or if this is someone you want to be, don’t be afraid to shout it loud and proud. We need to start to come together, to identify who we are as professionals. Doing so will enable our numbers to grow, and our presence to strengthen. This is one way that we can take the small ratios that represent women vs. men in tech companies to grow... let’s create a place for ourselves to grow into... let’s be proud to be women in tech!
