About a month or so ago I wrote a post entitled
Let’s Raise These Numbers!
in response to a survey that was put out on A List Apart. It seems that there are others in the field that are dissecting the large gap between the number of males and females in the industry. I came upon this article on Smashing Magazine the other day entitled
Gender Disparities in the Design Field
and had to share it with this community.
Overall I think the author, a professor of digital design and animation and web design specializations, in Minnesota USA, does a good job of highlighting why he believes there is such a lack of female talent in the professional design world. He starts with an obvious question, are the numbers that different in the university setting, and notes that the ratio of male to female students is even. How then is it so off balance in the working world? The author goes on to talk through his points in a way that lends us to some deeper thinking on the topic. Some of his points are controversial, some are obvious, but either way I definitely took some information away for myself. Give the article a read, and share any thoughts you might have on it... I’d love to hear them!
