Thoughts on the Women in Tech Debate

Thoughts on the Women in Tech Debate

Posted by Guest Blogger 07 October 2010 Careers |  Guest blogger |  Women in IT Written by Lis Hubert.

It’s not secret that all of us girls feel a little left out of the technology field. That is probably one of the reasons that you are on this website reading this blog in the first place. For us it’s about breaking the mould and either joining or finding more success in the technology field. I couldn’t agree more with these thoughts and feelings. Even though I run my own business, have plenty of interesting work and get to work on some really great projects, I still feel slighted in this industry. I read all of the material and see all of the news that we, as women, are just not on the same level with regards to numbers, pay, etc. But... what if part of the problem lies in what we’re doing to make the situation better for ourselves? It’s an interesting take on the barriers that we might see... maybe they aren’t as real as we think.

I bring this up because the other day I read this wonderful post: Why We Need to Reframe the “Women in Tech” Debate. In it the author describes her point of view in regards to why we believe there is a lack of support, and how we can move towards more support in the future. It’s a wonderful read and I learned a lot. Mostly I’ve learned that not only do I belong in tech but that there are many other women out there in the field, or thinking of joining the field, who belong here. We are strong ladies and we can make a difference in the field... it’s all about our perception. So, go ahead and give the article a read. Hopefully after you are done you’ll feel as inspired as I do!

Reframing the debate about women in tech? Excellent idea! Methinks we should widen it a little bit. Back there in the 1930s, there was an interesting PR campaign going on in the United States, called "Torches of Freedom": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torches_of_Freedom It was sponsored by tobacco industry, and its purpose was to win an equal opportunity of getting a lung cancer for women. "Women it Tech" is drawn along similar lines, only the purpose is little different: To win an equal opportunity of losing a job to offshoring for women.
