Women come late to tablets

Women come late to tablets

Tablets were one of the biggest technology stories of 2010 but women are still less likely than men to embrace the technology. According to market research group Nielsen, 43% of US tablet owners are now female. In 2010, the figure was 39%.

Early adopters
Just as we’ve seen over the past few years with smartphones, early adopters still tend to be young, male and wealthy.

Women and older age groups come to technology later, if at all.  The number of people over 55 who own a tablet has almost doubled in the past year, from 10 to 19%, for example – significantly increasing tablet users in general.

Smartphone ownership is pretty gender neutral these days, according to the same Nielsen figures, despite a significantly higher male user base when feature phones were first released.

E-readers: technology for women
A final intriguing aspect of the Nielsen research is that the gender bias in book buying has now  61% of e-reader owners in the US are female now, a figure which mirrors the higher proportion of women buying physical books.

Earlier in the year, research from the Book Industry Study Group found that 7 in 10 e-reader ‘power users’ (the 18% of e-book buyers who buy 60% of e-books) were women.
