Women keen to refresh IT skills to keep up with men

Women in IT
We recently ran a
competition
in association with the
Open University
where entrants had the chance to win a place on one of four Computer and ICT training courses. Entrants had to simply explain to us why they wanted the chance to win and we had an incredible 400 entries!
Of the entries, many wanted the opportunity because of a need to keep their skills up to date in order to be on a more equal playing field with their male colleagues but also a large proportion were women who had taken career break and wanted to gain a qualification to help them back into the industry. Interestingly there were also a number of entrants from women who had not previously worked in IT and were keen to begin a career in the sector – something we always like to hear about! What was not surprising was the large number who mentioned a lack of funds at work or at home to pay for training, and this was largely due to budget cuts.
The competition was a great way to give away such a fantastic prize whilst also gaining an insight in the reasons why women want to take part in training and what barriers they face trying to pursue training. The four winners of the competition were Firoozeh Saiepour, Sarah Gilbert, Veronique Pollacsek and Kelly Herbert. We wish them luck in their courses!
