Women in Public Life Events Programme

Women’s National Commission and the Government Equalities Office - Do you want to take part in public life?

Milton Keynes: 8th October, Well at Willen, Newport Road MK15 9AA

It is important that people from different sections of society have an equal opportunity to serve in public life. Account needs to be taken of women’s experiences, needs and perspectives, which may be different from men’s.  These must not be hidden or excluded from decisions and agendas. Greater numbers of women now realise that they have much to offer in public life – and that public life has much to offer them.

The proportion of women serving on UK public bodies is 33.3% (as at 31 March 2008).
Research has shown that fewer women than men apply for public appointments; meaning that fewer women are getting the opportunity to contribute their expertise for the benefit of the wider community.

The Women’s National Commission has been funded by the Government Equalities Office to run a series of events in each of the English regions.  These events will aim to address the challenges women encounter, and encourage women to seek out opportunities for taking part in public life.

This might include:
-    becoming a School Governor
-    getting involved with the local NHS Trust
-    involvement with the local council – on a local advisory board or as a local Councillor
-    becoming a Magistrate
-    through an appointment to the Board of a public body
