Global IT spending is set to create 7.1 million new jobs and 100,000 new businesses over the next four years, new figures indicate.

The research, produced by intelligence firm IDC, suggests that the number one source of new IT jobs will be in China, followed by the US.

Additionally, it was shown that, this year, Microsoft-related activities accounted for 14.7 million (42 per cent) out of a total 35.2 million people working in the industry.

Chief Research Officer at IDC John Gantz stated: "Today technology is a key factor for economic, social and technological progress and for the sustainability of economies all over the world."

The research also shows that the "Microsoft ecosystem" contributes significantly, especially in the creation of local jobs and businesses, he added.

IDC is a global provider of market intelligence, events and advice for the IT, consumer technology and telecommunications markets.
