"I am constantly aware that Goldman Sachs values and thrives from the strong diversity of its employees, and is a forerunner in this field. " Letitia Muttitt
Why did you join Goldman Sachs? I joined Goldman Sachs in 2004 as part of the Windows System Administration team within Technology Infrastructure. I was introduced to Goldman Sachs during the third year of my MEng Mechanical Engineering degree at the University of Warwick through a dinner scheme run by the European Women in Technology Network. The dinner was organised so that students were able to meet women from the firm in an informal environment. Following the introduction at the dinner I then undertook a 10 week summer internship which in turn led to the full time role.
What have you been doing since you joined? I joined the Firmwide Windows System Administration team during my internship and then returned to this team on joining as a graduate. Our team supports the back office sectors of the bank, offering varied and vastly diverse technologies and systems (from CCTV for the security office to financial systems for the treasury department). I have also been involved with the planning and implementation of a number of our new regional offices around Europe allowing me to act independently and take full ownership of projects in new and exciting environments.
What type of training have you received? (both technical and non-technical) When I joined as a graduate I received 7 weeks training in our New York office, allowing me to meet and forge relationships with members of the firm globally. Many of these strong networks still remain today. I was also provided with a range of training from business and professional skills, to technical training covering UNIX, Perl, Windows and networks. Through our learning resource, Goldman Sachs University, I have been able to further my training in both technical and non technical areas. The courses offered are limitless in a range of delivery options such as self taught, online courses and classroom based training.
How would you describe the working culture at Goldman Sachs? Goldman Sachs has a unique culture – everyone is working for the same goal and the rumours of cut throat competition are simply untrue. There is enough competition on the outside – why create more! I truly feel comfortable in picking up the phone and calling any colleague in any region at any time and knowing I can count on their assistance and support. There is also a very strong performance culture, and I am aware that the people around me are some of the most talented in the industry. This makes it both an enjoyable and challenging working environment.
How would you describe Goldman Sachs approach to diversity in its work force, in particular women’s initiatives? Goldman Sachs has a number of support networks for employees from diverse backgrounds, represented well by diversity week – a week of discussion lead by influential members in the public eye aimed at raising awareness to difference in the workplace. Since joining the firm I have been actively involved in the European Women in Technology network with particular focus on recruitment. Through my involvement in this network, I have been privileged in meeting some strong female role models and mentors who have guided me and offered support - along with having lots of fun along the way! Again I am constantly aware that Goldman Sachs values and thrives from the strong diversity of its employees, and is a forerunner in this field.
If you could give a recent IT graduate looking for a position in the IT market place a piece of advice, what would it be? My personal advice based on my experience would be to stay confident and not to feel restricted by the choice of degree or previous technology experience. What is more useful is a logical way of thinking, a willingness to learn and to realise the additional benefits you can bring to the team. |
