As the IT profession is very broad, there are many different options to consider when choosing a career in IT. In this section you can see what the role of a business analyst includes. Business Analyst
: Also known as BA, Business Systems Analyst and Functional Analyst.


The Business Analyst job description:

  • Establishes and builds agreement amongst team members on the details of project plans and manages expectations of the business users, providing options on how to proceed, clearly and frequently communicates the project status.
  • Matches the needs of the business with the use of IT.
  • Investigates processes and defines root cause problems.
  • Works with disparate business units to ensure that a clear and consistent project road map is established at the beginning of a piece of work.


Skills a Business Analyst may have are:

  • Ability to understand, explain and present complex technical ideas in a persuasive and convincing manner to all levels of technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Excellent communication skills as well as technical knowledge to explain to clients and/or business users about what is and is not possible and how an organisation can best deliver a project.
  • Excellent knowledge of business mapping/modelling processes.
  • Academic credentials in management information science (MIS), business studies, information technology or computer science.
  • Knowledge of technical/functional specification writing.
  • Ability to self-manage but awareness of when it’s necessary to involve senior managers on key issues.
  • Prototyping – RAD (rapid application development), DSDM (dynamic systems development method).
