Database Administrator: Also known as DBA
The Database Administrator job description:
- Administers, maintains, enhances and supports the database production and/or development environment. This includes day-to-day object management of any or all of the following: users, tables, indexes, synonyms, procedures, packages, triggers, views, database links, sequences and functions.
- Provides performance monitoring/regular monitoring of the database.
- Ensures database integrity and undertakes performance tuning, indexing, segmentation and database recovery.
- Provides on-site and remote support - second and third level support.
- Looks at the performance and scalability of a database.
Skills a Database Administrator may have are:
- Knowledge of database systems such as Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, IBM DB2 and Sybase.
- Knowledge of business intelligence and data warehousing products including SAS, Informatica and Data Junction.
- Knowledge of underlying infrastructures and data modelling.
