Businesses are being given the opportunity to equip their staff with business skills through charity IT volunteer schemes.
According to national IT volunteering programme iT4Communities, IT volunteering fills the gap between technical expertise and business awareness by offering "techies" the chance to manage their own projects and communicate with a range of people from different organisations.
It adds that such activities boost employees' confidence, enhance their technical skills and teach personal skills.
Recent iT4Communities volunteer Matthew Hughes commented: "Whilst I get a great deal of satisfaction from helping others - as well as good karma - I also realise the great benefit I get on a career level from working with different people up and down the country."
Speaking to IT Week, Seamus Reilly, Head of Information Security at consultancy firm Ernst & Young, recently warned that IT teams may become isolated if they fail to equip their workers with the necessary IT skills.
