Wednesday 11th January 2012 - Update from Maggie Berry, Managing Director, Women in Technology

Happy New Year and welcome to our first email update of 2012! By now, you should have settled back into your work routine and like us are raring to go for the year. We have a lot planned for the network and are happy to be part of some major campaigns, including e-Skills week and the everywoman in Technology Awards in March.

One of our focuses this year is to really tap into and engage female tech graduates and support them as they make the transition from studying to working life. We also have some planned changes in regards to our marketing and communications to ensure that you receive relevant information that is of interest to you, so keep an eye out for those.

As it's new year, many of you may be looking for a new job. Before you go for that new role, it may be worth attending our first training session of 2012 'Does your CV match your business image?' taking place on Tuesday 31st January. In February, we look at the unfortunate topic of redundancy which for many workers this year may be a reality. Our session 'Redundancy: Be prepared' will offer pragmatic and jargon-free advice ensuring you are fully prepared if you are at risk of losing your job. March sees the return of Suzanne Doyle Morris with her 1-day session 'Female Breadwinners: Managing a Successful Career and a Relationship as the main earner'. The price for this course also includes a copy of her new book. Click here to book your place to any of these sessions.

We have a few items to kick start you off this year, hopefully there will be something here that you can get involved in. To start with we have a few giveaways!

Morgan in Glasgow last October and we are giving away a signed copy of 'Sidestep & Twist'. 2. WIN a copy of 'Flex: Do Something Different'
The latest book by Ben C Fletcher and Karen Pine looks at the very simple but effective idea that breaking out of routines and loosening habits engenders a state of mind in which long-desired changes become achievable – such as losing weight and giving up smoking. ‘Flexing’ is underpinned by solid research about personality types and the rigid strategies that individuals develop for coping with life and how making small behavioural changes can significantly improve lives. We have one copy of 'Flex: Do Something Different' to giveaway. To be in with a chance of winning email your contact details to hsolly@womenin.co.uk by 5pm Friday 20th January 2012

3. WIN a new ebook: Overcoming Imposter Syndrome: Ten Strategies to Stop Feeling Like a Fraud at Work
One of our members, Elizabeth Harrin, has written a new ebook for anyone who has ever felt out of place at work. 'Overcoming Imposter Syndrome: Ten Strategies to Stop Feeling Like a Fraud at Work' is designed for people who have ever experienced that awkward feeling of not really knowing what they were doing at work. 'Imposter Syndrome' is really common and Elizabeth, who was recently named IT Professional Blogger of the Year by Computer Weekly, has spoken to many men and women and included their stories about how they have built their self-confidence tackled Imposter Syndrome and found their own ways to feel more positive about their performance at work. The book is available in PDF format here and costs £8. We have two free copies of Elizabeth's new ebook to give away - please email your details to hsolly@womenin.co.uk by 5pm Friday 20th January 2012.

4. Did you catch the WISE Bus?
In the 1980s the WISE Campaign (Women into Science and Engineering and Construction) ran a bus scheme that visited schools and other locations in order to inspire girls to consider study and careers in science, engineering, technology and maths. The buses had information, role models and more and they had a big impact on many young women and girls, on their teachers and parents. Did you get on the bus? Did it influence your choice of study or career? The WISE Campaign and the UKRC are keen to hear from women who remember the WISE Campaign Bus and from teachers and parents as well. They'd love to hear your stories and publish them. If it's relevant, please contact them: email: info@theukrc.org, telephone: 01274 436485 Twitter: @ukrc or Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/TheUKRC.

5. Networking and “breaking through the old boy network" - a chance to take part in some research
Elizabeth Quigley is a fifth year International Business and Modern Languages student at Strathclyde Business School. For her dissertation project she is looking into organisational networking for female managers in multinational companies and is particularly interested in hearing about female manager’s experiences and perceptions towards networking and looking at “breaking through the old boy network” as a means for career advancement. For her research, she needs to conduct some semi structured interviews with female managers in Scotland working in multinational companies this month. These interviews will be conducted in your own working environment and will take no longer than 40 minutes. This research is solely for a dissertation project and will not be seen by anyone else other than Elizabeth and the exam board. Participants would have the right to remain anonymous in the study and maintain the right to see the research paper upon completion. If you would be interested in taking part in this research, please contact Elizabeth on 07837 680 337 or elizabeth.quigley@strath.ac.uk

6. Volunteers needed for IT Can Help Campaign, London
Good with computers? Then this campaign needs you. You don’t have to be a technical expert. Familiarity as a user with computer hardware and the most commonly used software is enough to volunteer. What's more important is your ability to communicate and your interest in helping disabled people solve the computer problems they have. They are particularly interested in you if you can visit clients in north, east, south and central London. And they need a District Coordinator for East London. Volunteers are expected to make a maximum of four visits per year and even if you have had no previous experience of working with disabled people, they are still very interested in hearing from you and can provide support! To apply as a volunteer click here to fill in the Online Application Form and here to find out more about IT Can Help.
