RESPONSIBILITIES
Work with Market Risk Analysis, Risk Modelling, Corporate Risk and Derivatives Analysis groups within MRMA to develop models and systems for calculating, analyzing, and reporting the Firm’s trading risks. Responsibilities would span full life cycle of development, from initial analysis and requirements gathering with users, through design, development, testing, release and support.
Candidates will have extensive interaction with risk analysts, quantitative analysts, and front office technologists and strategists. High profile and mission critical projects will require candidates to become familiar with the underlying businesses and product lines we support, as well as our coding and design standards.
DEVELOPMENT PROSPECTS
Recent market events have put the spotlight on Risk Management. The Financial Regulators are laying out a new landscape, resulting in a number of large scale, high-profile technology projects, which offer both technical and business challenges.
This role offers the chance to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment and will provide exposure to the Market Risk Management business as well as related areas (Front-office trading businesses). Because the Market Risk remit encompasses risk management for the entire firm, there is an opportunity to learn about all financial instruments traded by Goldman Sachs.
The Goldman Sachs Market Risk Management function is cutting edge, pushing the boundaries of large-scale grid computing and java caching technologies. The successful candidate will work on the proprietary SecDB platform – a street-leading front-office risk management platform, encompassing an interpreted, scripting language (Slang) and embedded object database.
BUSINESS UNIT OVERVIEW
The Market Risk Management & Analysis (MRMA) group is responsible for calculating, for all trading desks and all financial products globally, the Firm’s trading risks arising from market factors. These calculations are analyzed and reported to a variety of audiences, including trading desks themselves, as well as senior management of the Firm, and external regulators. MRMA interacts closely with trading desks for the production of these calculations, as position information, market sensitivities, and pricing calculators are shared between the front office and MRMA.
Market Risk Technology (MRT) provides primary Application Development and Technical Support to the MRMA group. MRT is a global team of over 100 developers located in New York, London, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Bangalore.
We are looking for several strong technologists to participate in the design and development of the Firm’s future capabilities around market risk, as well as to participate in the maintenance, enhancement, and daily operation of the existing capabilities. Ideal candidates will possess a combination of strong technical skills, as well as strong interest in the business processes and financial concepts of portfolio risk. Prior knowledge of risk is desirable, but is not required.
SKILLS / EXPERIENCE
MANDATORY
- At least 3 years of expertise and professional experience in at least one of Java or C++
- Significant knowledge of relational database technologies such as Sybase or DB2
- Willingness to embrace a proprietary development language (SecDB and Slang)
- Track record of technical excellence with an emphasis on quality and focus on testing and continuous improvements
The successful candidate will also:
- Demonstrate strong problem solving & analytical skills
- Working knowledge and proficiency in software engineering principles applicable to large-scale systems, backed up by real-project implementation experience
- Be hands-on and take ownership of issues to ensure follow-through
- Have strong communication skills and feel comfortable working in a global team that both welcomes and challenges new ideas
- Have experience of partnering with clients to deliver benefits to the business
- Knowledge of some area of trading, and basic familiarity with one or more categories of financial instruments
- Strong desire to learn about portfolio risk techniques
PREFERRED
- Knowledge of portfolio risk techniques (value at risk, stress testing, scenario analysis, risk attribution, etc.)
- Knowledge of large-scale grid computing techniques
- Knowledge of java clustering and distribution technologies
- Experience of working with large heap JVMs
- Technical Skills:
o Linux/Solaris
o Scripting languages (such as Perl, shell)
o Enterprise-level messaging
QUALIFICATIONS
Degree in a numerical subject, such as computing, engineering, maths or science degree.
