AVP - Unix Systems Administrator, Trading Domain Operations Group

The team contains 2nd line Senior SA’s responsible for day-to-day system administration, problem and major incident resolution.

The department provides infrastructure support to all business areas in London and escalation support to the Europe/Middle East/Africa region. The team supports SUN Solaris & Linux Servers and associated infrastructure on SUN Enterprise, HP and IBM hardware.

Responsibilities
The main role of the team will be to perform the following tasks: 
  • Work against pre-determined working practices with fixed scope 
  • Management activity reports 
  • Participating in audit reviews 
  • Problem management and resolution 
  • In depth root cause analysis 
  • Pro-active analysis for issue avoidance and capacity management 
  • Working with the L1 and L2 teams housed in India, Singapore and Jacksonville 
  • Project logistics and delivery 
  • 2nd line UNIX systems support and administration 
  • Software release and change management 
  • Resourcing of 24x7x365 cover

Role Specific Responsibilities:
Once up to speed and familiar with the environment, the role will primarily be project based, focussing on process and service improvement issues. Maintain service integrity through proactive maintenance/management Act as liaison with IT departments in regional offices to ensure standards compliance and assist in troubleshooting. The role also involves senior level 2 and escalation support of the Production issue from both SUN Solaris & Red Hat Linux infrastructure. Strong Solaris / Linux Server Support and Administration are key job functions and so is the backup and monitoring of the servers as well problem management and reporting. The environment is currently very stable but the role has a requirement for Oncall work which is 1 in every 6 weeks. This will involve remote on-call and weekend support (Mon-Fri 7am-7pm, Sat/Sun 24/7). To provide some work life balance, the SA is expected to work from home for the entire duration of his on-call week.

Requirements
Essential: 
  • Strong UNIX administration (Solaris/Red Hat Linux) for a financial institution 
  • Infrastructure support (Solaris Server) and trouble shooting of Sun/HP/IBM hardware
Advanced: 
  • Administration of Solaris 8, 9 & 10, Red Hat Linux AS4, AS5 and ESX 3.02 
  • Veritas Volume Manager, Veritas File System &Veritas Clustering 
  • BMC Patrol
Good Understanding: 
  • Jumpstart & Kickstart 
  • Networking Principles (TCP/IP Networking including DHCP and NIS) 
  • Server Monitoring Principles 
  • Shell Scripting knowledge Bourne, C & Perl 
  • Sendmail, NTP, Samba & Exceed 
  • Exposure to EMC/SAN Storage, Legato Backup
Secondary: 
  • DNS 
  • Performance/Capacity Management - Teamquest 
  • Hardware - Sun Enterprise/ Fire range, Compaq/HP DL & Blade 
  • Perl 
  • AIX
Personal Attributes Required: 
  • Degree educated or equivalent 
  • Strong presentation, inter-personal and communication skills (written and oral) 
  • Ability to deliver to tight timescales 
  • Team player, enthusiastic, flexible and committed 
  • Ability to work under pressure and prioritise effectively 
  • Practical yet innovative can do attitude
