Broadcast Systems Producer - Design

We currently have positions for Broadcast Systems Developer’s to work in our Broadcast Computing department within our Design group in Broadcast Services. It’s key role is to work closely with our core channel brands – primarily Sky Sports, Sky News, and Sky Bet – to deliver a range of solutions for broadcast television, interactive services, and other platforms.

The Broadcast Systems Producer’s primary responsibility is the production, maintenance and ongoing development of software and hardware systems. You will work with other members of the department, programme makers, other key areas of the Broadcast Services division, and other internal and external parties with the final goal of producing functional systems.

The systems developed can be standalone, integrated with other Broadcast Computing solutions, or components of much larger projects. You will ensure that systems meet requirements of quality and timeliness, and that high standards of communication are maintained with your business stakeholders. A significant part of your time will be spent in live production environments. You must be able to respond well under stress and think quickly under pressure. You must be able to communicate clearly with people in diverse roles.

The role requires a robust, pragmatic personality. Specifications are often minimal, and fast-moving requirements mean that you must be able to replan ‘on the fly'. Projects range in size from small business components written by one developer in a day, through to long term projects of over 10,000 development hours, and everything in between.

Role Responsibilities: 
  • Development of hardware/software solutions, primarily in a software development role 
  • Liaison with designers, statisticians, technical directors, studio production staff, programme makers, and a wide cross-section of the business 
  • Liaise with Operations Analysts to ensure that effective and up-to-date documentation is available for all systems 
  • Proactively monitoring systems to ensure correct operation 
  • Continually assessing the effectiveness of procedures, and recommending upgrades to processes and procedures 
  • Ensuring that all faults are logged and that reporting procedures are followed 
  • Understanding the roles of others who will be called on to correct problems outside the areas of your responsibility / knowledge

Skills and experience required:
Because of the wide range of systems, technologies and platforms we deal with, breadth of knowledge is more important than specialisation in one particular field. There are four broad skill categories for the role. These skills are currently grouped as follows: 
  • Core: .NET, VB, Inscriber RTX, Database experience (SQL Server and /or Oracle), XML 
  • Secondary: ASP/Web development, Studio production, graphics, video 
  • Background/proprietary: Cold Fusion, C/C++. Knowledge of Publitronics, vizRT, Chyron, and Pinnacle products 
  • Track record of working as a Developer in an Entertainment / Broadcast technology environment desirable 
  • Strong problem solving ability with a proactive approach. Good awareness of the business needs and marketplace 
  • Good written skills and strong communication skills at all levels 
  • Ability to lead by example and have the ability to learn and apply new skills quickly and effectively in a fast moving technical broadcast environment

The role is based at our offices in Osterley. Please note, although you will be rostered on a broadly Monday – Friday basis, work will be scheduled around project deadlines, programme output and other operational concerns.
