News and Knowledge (N&K) is the department within BBC Future Media responsible for the following BBC Online products: News, Sport, Weather, Knowledge & Learning, CBBC, CBeebies, BBC Homepage and Search. We manage and develop products on websites, mobile devices and interactive TV. We have a world-leading approach to content management and metadata, and we are also delivering the London 2012 Olympics across BBC Online.
The department consists of software developers, project managers, product managers, business support staff, and works closely with designers and editorial staff. We use our knowledge and application of audience research, new and emerging technologies, combined with creativity and collaboration across the BBC’s content divisions, to deliver world class digital products and services which deliver reach, quality, impact, and value for the BBC.
Role
Aims of the Job
As the newest role in our Product Management job family, Data Architects are responsible for the creation and management of data models, ontologies and data governance processes which provide a backbone for our major online products. They collaborate with stakeholders and representatives of the BBC’s content divisions, as well as multi-disciplinary software delivery teams across Future Media.
Key Responsibilities
• Work closely with Product Managers, business analysts, technical architects, designers and stakeholders to collect, understand, organise and document the data requirements for a given product.
• Create ontologies based on product requirements and take ownership of the ontology for a given domain.
• Understand & help to maintain domain specific data models and ontologies.
• Communicate how the model and data impacts product, design and technical decisions.
• Investigate and evaluate ontology modeling solutions, including researching existing published ontologies and existing BBC projects.
• Lead data modeling sessions with groups of stakeholders.
• Identify, analyse and document data authoring processes & workflows. Identify opportunities for streamlining and improvements.
• Define guidelines for data management and content annotation and assist in training of data managers and editorial staff.
• Collaborate and interact with delivery teams and data managers in supportingprocesses/workflows around data authoring and content annotation.
• Convert datasets from one format to another.
• Gather, analyse, and report on the quality of data authoring and content annotation.
Requirements
Essential Skills & Experience
• Working data models
• Defining and maintaining data governance structures, data authoring workflows, and managing data quality.
• An understanding of web standards.
• Experience with data editing/modelling tools like Topbraid, XML editors and Google Refine
• Demonstrable experience effectively communicating complex or technical concepts at all levels within organisations and to diverse audiences.
• Mediating domain modelling and requirements gathering workshops with a variety of stakeholders of varying disciplines and technical knowledge.
• Experience to include working on roughly 2-3 projects, to include a variety of online and customer facing, back-end systems and integration.
• Evidence of problem solving ability and providing creative solutions.
