The BBC is currently looking for an Infrastructure Engineer to join Future Media (FM) Operations, which is the team working behind the scenes to keep the BBC’s online services up and running 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The services we maintain include the BBC News and Sport web sites and the highly popular BBC iPlayer
The department is divided into 3 main groups:
1. Operations – responsible for the smooth operation of all distribution channels, including web applications
2. Service – responsible for service delivery and ensuring we meet customer expectations
3. Platform – responsible for architecture, technical design and software engineering functions that ensure the various platforms (web, mobile, iTV, streaming, etc) remain current and effective. responsible for the operation and management of the BBC's online, mobile and iTV infrastructure, including media streaming, web platforms and network & distribution channels for all digital media.
As an Infrastructure Engineer, you will work within the Infrastructure Team in Operations and be responsible for the infrastructure of platforms used to support BBC’s Online services. One of your responsibilities will be to maintain hardware environments relating to the BBC’s online services. This will include development, stage and production systems across all BBC data centres.
This is a challenging role, and as such you must have the following experience for us to consider you:
• Experience using Microsoft Windows Server 2003 & 2008 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux
• A practical understanding of server operating system and application deployment, configuration and maintenance
• An understanding of virtualisation technologies, particularly VMware and Xen
The level of seniority in this role is very much dependent on what additional skills the candidate can bring to the table. As such, the following areas of knowledge and experience are all desirable, however the more of these boxes you can tick, the higher the level of seniority we can bring you into the BBC at:
o Installation and maintenance of Intel/AMD based server and storage hardware (mainly HP)
o Physical infrastructure build & management
o Knowledge of DNS, DHCP and related protocols
o Experience of using administrative build tools, ideally Cobbler & Puppet or HP’s RDP tool
o Implementation of monitoring tools and SNMP
o Knowledge of web servers (ideally Apache) configuration and management.
o Experience of power management & monitoring
o Knowledge of maintaining Cisco and Juniper devices
o Using scripting languages e.g. Unix shell scripts
This is a great role within a team which can provide a lot of training, progression and hands on experience around major, low tolerance systems.
