Role Summary
This will include prioritisation of new project opportunities, assessment of ongoing initiatives and review of the overall balance of investments.
You’ll also play an important part in determining and leading specific initiatives to drive improvement in the future performance of our investment plan.
The Portfolio Management team play a key role in the management of the UK’s annual capex investment portfolio (c. £450m annual budget), providing governance support to the Project Investment Meeting (PIM) and investment analysis, options and recommendations.
Essence of Role
Demonstrate excellence in portfolio analysis
- Establish hurdle rates against which to judge and prioritise new project ideas
- Provide ongoing assessment of the contribution of active projects within the portfolio
- Assess the balance of investments (allocation across Run / Grow / Transform, strategic themes, risk profile) to propose “data driven” portfolio scenarios within the quarterly planning cycle
- Be recognised throughout the company as a subject matter expert and continue to build knowledge through industry best practice, creating and maintaining relationships with suppliers, partners etc and academic research
Drive improvement in UK portfolio return on investment (ROI)
- Benchmark ROI performance of cross functional programmes, leveraging the Group PPM tool to enable comparison with other OpCos
- Create and manage a strategy to establish a culture of benefits definition and realisation through the whole investment lifecycle
- Build a partnership with Finance to jointly manage a schedule of Post Implementation Reviews (PIRs) and ensure lessons learned are adopted by new projects
- Define and ensure adherence to best practice in these areas
Define and execute strategies for other critical dimensions of portfolio performance (e.g. time to market, portfolio risk management, the alignment of post-launch opex costs, dependency management)
- Benchmark current performance
- Define targets and roadmap for future strategy in these areas
- Ensure the roadmap is planned, resourced and executed
