Senior Product Manager
As a Senior Product Manager with significant experience of developing and deploying architectures and infrastructures for software engineering services in a new media multi-tiered application stack, you will be in your element in our Publishing Services Team.
Based in London, Publishing Services is a team dedicated to the ingest and serving of public-facing BBC and non-BBC programme metadata. It sits within Core Services, an engineering team whose remit is to provide shared software services on which the BBC’s online programming is based. These services include metadata APIs, rights and metadata management tools, workflow and queuing systems, as well as audio and video transcoding. Core Services is part of the wider Programmes and On Demand (POD) department and in turn, part of the BBC Future Media (FM) Division.
BBC FM’s ambition is to create the most valued open digital media services in the world. We want to transform the BBC for an interactive, on-demand world and find new ways of reaching audiences wherever they are, with new formats across PC, TV, tablet and mobile devices.
As a Senior Product Manager in POD you will be responsible for delivering well-factored, reusable, scalable products and services which align to POD architectural principles and product outcomes. You will be responsible for leadership and delivery at every stage of the product lifecycle, ranging across product planning, performance measurement, and iterative development. Key to the role is providing a product vision, directing multi-disciplinary software engineering teams to deliver it, inspiring creativity and providing guidance.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE
- Demonstrable experience managing and developing digital media products and services – including defining product roadmaps and long-term plans.
- Several years’ experience specifying, developing and deploying architectures and infrastructure for software engineering services in a new media multi-tiered application stack.
- Significant experience working within new media, broadcast, or related media sectors.
- Broad knowledge of relevant technologies, including: Java (Spring), Perl, PHP (Zend), XML/XSLT/XSL, RDBMS (Oracle, MySql), queue architectures, mobile, HTTP, HTML/JS/AJAX etc. and experience at the application level in data security, social media tools, content management, media playout and streaming.
- Demonstrable experience of product development and product life-cycle management.
- Good understanding of project management (especially Agile/Kanban) and software engineering processes and practices
- Experience communicating concepts and ideas to stakeholders at all levels within organisations, including oral and written presentations, proposals, specifications, and reports.
- Proven ability to influence decision-making at all levels within an organisation, and in a variety of contexts, including Director / Board level.
- Experience managing commercial and contractual relationships with third party suppliers and partners.
- Ability to simplify complex problems into component parts and evaluate systematically
- Evidence of problem solving and providing creative solutions.
- Experience working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams.
DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE
- A strong interest in BBC products and content output.
- Experience of approaches to modelling metadata and rights.
- A proven track record of successful project delivery within new media environments.
- Project delivery certification (e.g. ScrumMaster certification, PRINCE2 Practitioner)
- Working knowledge of BBC output; editorial, compliance, and regulatory issues for the BBC.
- An understanding of the BBC’s internet infrastructure.
- Strong negotiation skills.
