Social Web Developer

We think our website is pretty cool. But we’re not satisfied with “pretty cool.” We’re aiming for “totally awesome.” And that’s where you come in.

We want our web presence to embody the social nature of our business, and we’re starting with the launch of a new careers site. We’re in the early stages of planning, and we have pretty aggressive deadlines (our Head of Recruiting wants the moon on a stick … tomorrow). In addition, we’ve always been at the center of the discussion about the next big thing in custom software development -- so our own sites really need to embody this. Following on, over the next year, we will be building interactive communities with our clients, partners and friends. Oh, and we’re also thinking mobile.

What’s On Offer

This is an internal role, so you’ll get to be part of an awesome business that has changed the way the world does software development, but your clients will be ThoughtWorkers. Basically, you’ll have 1800 highly opinionated stakeholders, some of whom have written the books, given the keynotes at the conferences, are the OSS key committers and have been at the centre of changing how software is done today. It probably goes without saying that we’re passionate about how we write software, but like the cobbler’s children, we’re closer to the start of our journey internally. We’re into agile, continuous delivery, build pipelines and automated testing, so you’ll help us improve what we do today, and get to practice all of these.

You’ll be working as part of a growing team, building out a growing stable of websites. Our main site www.thoughtworks.com is supported by a variety of practitioner-focused microsites, including testing.thoughtworks.com and continuous-delivery.thoughtworks.com, alongside properties such as www.facebook.com/thoughtworks, www.youtube.com/thoughtworks and www.twitter.com/#!/twthoughts.

You’ll have stakeholders in various locations. Supporting a global business and helping us to develop our presence on the social web, there will be some need to travel, in particular to London.

You’ll bring the following:

Minimum four years experience in the industry.
Awesome front-end web development skills, including HTML4/5, CSS2/3 and JavaScript so that you can create pixel perfect code from website designs.
Strong Drupal skills including knowledge of Commons, custom module development and theming. In an ideal world, you’ll support Drupal innovation and will be part of the Drupal community.
Knowledge of and passion for the latest and greatest in social web. From APIs to innovative patterns -- we want your input into our social strategy.
An understanding of SEM and SEO considerations -- starting with ‘great content’...
A design sensibility, including a solid knowledge of building web graphics, using design standards and optimizing assets.
Some quality assurance skills and sensibilities -- you worry equally about usability, performance, and cross-browser testing.
A slight obsession with doing the Web right. Our sites need to play well with others, and whether it’s Atom or OAuth, you have a clear picture of how it should be done.
An opinion on whether we need to migrate from SVN to git or mercurial.
Any video editing skills would guarantee you a cookie as part of your hiring process.

We love hearing from people who are passionate about the same things we are, and we think this is an awesome opportunity to join the team and get to influence our social web presence from our Manchester office.
