Systems Engineer - out-of-hours and on-call work, moving to 24x7 shift rota

Would you like to be part of a highly skilled, tech savvy team? Do you love technology and the internet? Do you enjoy ‘playing’ with technology and seeing what it can do? Can you talk IT to non-IT people?

Our client is a business IT services group who provide data centre services, managed services and specialist consultancy to companies who run business critical IT systems. They provide managed hosting and carrier-class communications services from their data centres in London Docklands and deliver professional and consultancy services from their central London offices.

This Systems Engineer role is a great entry level position for someone with a keen technical interest and skill set (but not necessarily an IT degree or similar qualification). You will be trained up to provide second and third line support and tasks will include:
• Day to day operations of data centre systems and services including installations, maintenance, patching, upgrades and backups
• Documentation of operational systems and services and general operating procedures
• Assisting with installation of new systems and services in the data centre including physical installation, cabling, OS installation/configuration, and documentation

In order to be successful in this role, you must:
• Have very strong communication skills
• Be bright and articulate
• Have an open mind and be receptive to new and changing challenges
• Have an obvious interest in IT and the web
• Demonstrate an interest in learning and acquiring new skills in a fast paced environment
• Be adaptable and flexible in a complex, changing and pressured environment
• Have a desire to work with new technologies

From a technical point of view, the following skills are relevant:
• Windows and/or Linux server operating systems
• x86 based server installation, maintenance and troubleshooting; backup and recovery systems
• Systems management, performance tuning and monitoring tools
• Web hosting
• TCP/IP internet working and related services
• Creativity in approach to new challenges; both technological and organisational

Our client is a small firm – the technical team is 15 strong – and you will be able to get your hands onto the technology from day one. Formal training will be provided but you will be expected to get to grips with technical kit for yourself and work out how it can help you solve problems in innovative ways. This is a really exciting role but if you don’t think you would like working in an ‘organised chaos’ environment, then it’s probably not a suitable fit for you…
