As a Technical Product Manager with experience managing and delivering software products and services – including defining product roadmaps and long-term plans coupled with broad knowledge of relevant development environments, including: Java (Spring), PHP (Zend), RDBMS (Oracle, Mysql), Javascript (JQuery with a strong understanding of non-functional considerations including security, resilience, scalability), you will be in your element in our Platform team in the Online Technology Group (OTG) department, part of the wider Future Media (FM) division.
The Platform team provides the software foundation on which BBC online products are built. Our Technical Product Managers play a leadership role within the team, defining the Platform roadmap and driving the delivery of resilient, scalable and delightful software to a demanding developer community.
Within BBC Future Media, the core engineering team known as Online Technology Group (OTG) is the 'engine room' providing shared platforms and services which power BBC Online’s products, from iPlayer to BBC News and Sport. We offer a ‘product SDK’ that includes shared UI chrome, sign-in and analytics, as well as a toolchain and a diversity of core packages including httpd, PHP, Tomcat, ActiveMQ.
In this role you will be expected to deliver:
1. Product strategies and propositions for the products which fall within the remit of the role, which are regularly updated to reflect new information, changing audiences, emerging technology, editorial strategies, and resource availability;
2. Medium and long-term roadmaps for those digital products;
3. Regular, iterative product enhancements and other deliveries which support the strategy and roadmaps for the product(s);
4. Value for money – including delivery of product roadmaps and operational efficiency– against planned budget
5. Collaborative, professional, and successful relationships with FM&T teams and other stakeholders
6. Significant contribution to the shape, direction, and execution of the goals of the division, department, and team – including support and leadership for other members of the Product team.
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE
1. Demonstrable experience managing and delivering software products and services – including defining product roadmaps and long-term plans.
2. Extensive experience specifying, developing and deploying software projects for the web, in all layers of the stack
3. Broad knowledge of relevant development environments, including: Java (Spring), PHP (Zend), RDBMS (Oracle, Mysql), Javascript (JQuery with a strong understanding of non-functional considerations including security, resilience, scalability.)
4. Broad knowledge of developing and deploying on the RedHat Enterprise Linux platform.
5. Proven experience setting product budget and delivering within that budget.
6. Good understanding of project management (especially Agile) and software engineering processes and practices
7. Experience communicating concepts and ideas to stakeholders at different levels within organisations, including oral and written presentations, proposals, specifications, and reports.
8. Proven ability to influence decision-making at different levels within an organisation, and in a variety of contexts
9. Experience managing commercial and contractual relationships with third party suppliers and partners (contracts valued up to £100k per annum)
10. Ability to simplify complex problems into component parts and evaluate systematically
11. Evidence of problem solving and providing creative solutions.
12. Experience working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, including as line manager of staff (5-12 direct & indirect reports), including professional and personal development, coaching and performance management.
DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE
1. Experience of providing products to a customer base of developers
2. A strong interest in BBC products and content output
3. A proven track record of successful project delivery within new media environments
4. Project delivery certification (e.g. ScrumMaster certification, PRINCE2 Practitioner)
5. Working knowledge of BBC output; editorial, compliance, and regulatory issues for the BBC
6. An understanding of the BBC’s internet infrastructure
7. Strong negotiation skills
