8. Coming Into Your Own, Monday 18th to Thursday 21st October 2010, Belgium
Coming Into Your Own (CIYO) is a personal leadership development programme for women who are interested in engaging in a process of reflection, exploration and regeneration. Many women find that in the process of striving to succeed at work they have developed only part of who they are while leaving vital aspects of themselves behind. In the midst of substantial achievement women often report feeling empty, burned out or invisible. Over the past 20 years CIYO have found ways to help women access their reservoir of presence and to bring forward a fuller expression of themselves. They guide women in the journey towards mastering the relationship between inner dynamics and work/life challenges.

Their approach deliberately works with the whole individual – the physical, intellectual, emotional and spiritual dimensions of each woman – to encourage the deeper introspection that they think is critical for our time. They combine the attention of one-on-one relationship with small group work and the transforming power of the circle. They will focus on each woman’s individual journey, uncovering how she has navigated her life and what her struggles and successes have been. They will work together to identify current and emerging challenges and support each woman in her aspirations and development. It is our hope that this work will contribute to addressing the fragmentation in the world, the barrenness in many of our workplaces and the urge to live in a way that responds to the deep stresses of this era.

Examples of organisations that have sent participants to the CIYO include HP, BP, the World Bank Group, United Way, Shell, Intel, Boeing, Anglo American, BT and the Metropolitan Police. Many women have also chosen to attend as individuals. With a maximum of 16 participants and four faculty, all participants benefit from a good amount of individual attention.

Cost - Corporate: £1,800 per person; Non Profit/Individual: £1,000 per person; Groups/Teams from a single organisation: call for rates - womenintechnology members are eligible for a 15% discount. For more information and to download the booking form click here.

11. Call for women in IT case studies!
AGCAS, the professional association for careers advisors, and Graduate Prospects research, write and publish various career guidance products. They are currently updating their occupational profile for information systems manager and systems analyst. Occupational profiles are an in-depth focus on a particular job role - they contain information like typical work activities, career development and a list of useful websites and sources. They are currently looking for a case study  - ideally recent graduates (within the last five years) although they are willing to accept someone slightly outside of this time span - they are more concerned that the case study illustrates how to secure an information systems manager or systems analyst. role. The case study would need to answer a series of ten questions which is then written into a case study of no more than 500 words. This will be sent back to the case study so they review the final version. Case studies will also need to sign a
data protection form. The case study can choose to use a pseudonym and can also choose not to use the name of their employer. Finally, a case study needs to fill in a job analysis questionnaire, a quick set of questions that asks about their day to day activities. This should only take a few minutes – it is just ticking some boxes regarding the job. This remains anonymous and is used in collating information for what job would suit a graduate.

For further information and if you have any questions, please contact Francesca Bauer, Editor at AGCAS - 0114 2515756 or francesca.bauer@agcas.org.uk

The gender-IT project is a two-year initiative co-funded by the EU’s Lifelong Learning Programme, under the Leonardo da Vinci Action. As part of this, she is undertaking a quantitative survey and would be very grateful for your help! She is looking to hear from female professionals around the world who have worked in the corporate world and left to become entrepreneurs - the closing date is Thursday 15th July 2010.

The survey aims to shed light on:
  • Why women are leaving the security of their full-time jobs to either become entrepreneurs or to run a portfolio career
  • What are the pull factors that drive women into entrepreneurship
  • Any cultural and structural challenges in the corporate world that make caring obligations and career development incompatible
  • What companies can learn from their former female talent to make their cultures more engaging.

You can take the survey here.

In return for your time, there is the chance to win a place on the Athena Mutual Mentoring Programme which usually costs £2,000.
