The threat of costly litigation along with good working practices is the best way to improve conditions for women in the workplace, an expert has said.
According to Richard Linskell, Secretary of the Employment Lawyers Association, employers need to implement policies to prevent women being discriminated against at work.
He stated: "From an employee's perspective, where they feel they have been a victim of discrimination they have to raise that issue with the company through a written grievance and, if necessary, they will need to pursue tribunal proceedings to enforce that right."
Mr Linskell went on to say that, as well as implementing policies to stop the unfair treatment of female employees, companies need to train their staff concerning their responsibilities over the issue.
Research conducted recently by the Fawcett Society suggested that 3,000 women lose their jobs each year as a result of becoming pregnant and many who return to work take on lower paid jobs below their skill level.
