Thanks to everyone who came along to the 'Mentoring for Women in IT' event that we co-hosted with the Worshipful Company of Information Technologists (WCIT) on Tuesday 28th September 2010.

The Worshipful Company of Information Technologists (WCIT) is the 100th City of London Livery company and was formed in 1992 to represent the IT industry and on the 17th June 2010 they received their Royal Charter. In total there are 108 livery companies in London representing different professions, trades and crafts, both past and present, and WCIT has a membership of approximately 700 Freemen and Liverymen.

WCIT works to promote the IT industry but they also run a significant programme of charitable and educational activities including their Journeyman Scheme which is a three year mentoring programme for people who have about five years commercial IT experience. The Journeyman Scheme is designed to fast track their personal and career development with exceptional professional support and with opportunities to be involved in the activities of the Company. A 'Journeyman' is supported by a ‘Journey Mentor’ who is a member of WCIT and their role is to provide support and guidance to the Journeyman, both on developing their professionalism and on wider aspects of participating in the IT community and WCIT.

This event was an open evening to find out more about the Journeyman Scheme and to determine whether it could be a useful tool to attendees career development. The presenters covered the history of the livery movement, about the Worshipful Company of Information Technologists itself, about their mentoring programme - the Journeyman Scheme - and we heard from current Journeymen and how the scheme has enhanced their IT careers.

After the presentations there was the chance to network over drinks with WCIT members and members of the womenintechnology.co.uk network.
