A website has been set up to try to commemorate and find some of the most influential female scientists of all time - womeninscience.co.uk.
The project was announced at the Cheltenham Science Festival recently and is being sponsored by L'Oreal, according to the Daily Telegraph.
On the website, 40 of the most famous and decorated women in science are being showcased to the public where visitors to the site are able to read blogs and biographies of their achievements and vote for their favourite.
Among the nominees are Vivienne Parry, writer and member of the Medical Research Council, Countess Lovelace, a computing pioneer and science historian Dr Patricia Fara of Cambridge University.
Some of the more surreal nominations include Sophie Germain, the German mathematician who pretended to be a man and the polymath Hypatia of Alexandria, who was murdered by those who envied her scholarship.
The findings will be forming part of L'oreal's 10th annual For Women in Science awards.
