Position:

Company: HSBC
Location: London

Please describe your background and career at HSBC (how long you've worked there, the roles and responsibilities you've held etc.)

I have been working in Investment Banking IT for about 18 years, and joined HSBC 17 months ago to take on a role in a newly restructured MI Development team. Since I joined I have been offered a bigger role with increased remit and responsibility. The pace of change and amount of investment being made in the Corporate and Investment Banking division is very exciting and I have been impressed with how HSBC assessed my skills and recognised my capabilities so soon after joining the team.

Why did you choose a career in IT in the first place? e.g. was it a choice or a natural progression from something you'd done previously?

I did a Geology / Physics degree at University and after working for an oil exploration company for 16 months, decided I wanted to work in the banking sector. I joined a software consultancy as a graduate trainee, as companies take on graduates from all disciplines not just from a Computer Science background.

How would you describe the work environment / working culture at HSBC?

Like any Investment bank, the work environment at HSBC is fast paced and challenging. HSBC is a very large organisation and there are always opportunities to expand your role and responsibilities if you demonstrate your capabilities. HSBC balanced well the needs of individual circumstances with the business needs to try and find a mutual beneficial work / life balance where possible.

What have been the highlights of your career at HSBC and what do you like best about working at HSBC?

The highlight of my career at HSBC has been the opportunities to change roles and expand my responsibilities in a short time frame. I really enjoy working with the team here and even when things get pressurised there is always a great team spirit. Global team work is the emphasis here – so communication is key!

How would you describe HSBC’s approach to diversity in its work force, in particular women's initiatives?

From my experience, HSBC focuses on diversity at all levels. The number of women in IT at HSBC is comparable to the industry average and it rewards individuals based on capabilities and potential. I have been very happy with the diversity policies here.

What are your tips for success at HSBC?

As with any organisation, take responsibility to managing your own career. HSBC is a large organisation, so if you are looking for a new challenge there are many opportunities to apply for new roles internally as these are advertised on the Intranet. Managers are encouraged to support internal moves as this ensures skills are kept within the bank and people are continuously refreshing their skills with new opportunities.

If you could give women looking for a position in the IT market place a single piece of advice what would it be?

Be confident in your own abilities. In my experience, women have many more skills than they think they have!
