'Critical' to have women on boardrooms

14/02/2012 'Critical' to have women on boardroomsIt is "critical" to have a fair representation of women on boardrooms if the UK is to call itself an egalitarian society.

This is the view of Piya Khanna, founder and executive coach at Change to Succeed, who called for more work to be done to boost gender equality at senior level of business.

Indeed, she echoed recent claims by prime minister David Cameron, who suggested that the UK economy could suffer without more women on boards.

"It makes good business and economic sense to have gender diverse boards," she explained.

"Our companies need to be more competitive and innovative than ever before. Having senior women in our corporations is therefore vital if we are to ever attain this goal and compete successfully with the eastern economies and the US in the future."

She urged businesses not to ignore the "enormous talent pool" that women offer, which can restrict the competitiveness and performance of businesses.

"Women have been found to increase innovation and accountability, as well as have a positive influence on other organisational criteria," Ms Khanna remarked, adding that a higher profile of women will also inspire others to follow.
