'Everyone' is an internet content creator
20/01/2009
Every single person is now responsible for the content of the internet, with most websites offering the chance to contribute whoever and wherever their viewer is.
That is the view of the
Open Right Group
, which has suggested that user-generated content is now powering the web more than ever before.
The digital rights organisation has claimed that the popularity of websites where the main content is user-generated illustrates the increasing power of regular users on the internet.
Becky Hogge, executive director at the firm, commented: "The top ten sites in the UK is dominated by sites where the main content is supplied by users ? ordinary consumers and visitors.
"What does this all mean? Well, firstly, what it means is that everyone is now a content creator."
Some examples of sites that rely on technology users to create the content are Facebook,
Wikipedia
, eBay and YouTube.
Alexa Traffic Rankings for the UK in the last three months ranked Google as the most viewed site, but also included
MSN
, Bebo and Yahoo.
