'No scientists' without degrees
10/09/2009
The value of earning a degree is higher than ever in the current economic climate, education group Graduate Prospects has claimed.
For people looking to move into IT and
technology jobs
, it is even more crucial to go to university, the education group claimed.
This is because certain professions require a degree and people need to do all they can to gain an edge over the competition, whatever
graduate job
they are searching for.
Charlie Ball, deputy research director of the higher education careers services unit at Graduate Prospects, said that nobody can expect to leave university with a job straight away.
He said: "It very much is still worth going to university and, if anything, in a recession even more so.
"There'll be no doctors, no lawyers, no scientists, no engineers, nobody in social care, nobody in that huge vista of well paid, professional roles for which a university degree is required."
New research from
Santander
found that half or young people believe work experience is as important as higher education.
