'Too late' to regulate use of consumer devices at work

26/01/2012 'Too late' to regulate use of consumer devices at...It is almost too late for many businesses to control the use of consumer devices being brought into work, it has been suggested.

"The idea of trying to stipulate exactly what devices people use is impossible now," said Nigel Hawthorn, vice-president of marketing EMEA at network security company Blue Coat Systems.

He added that as consumer devices are used for both work and consumer purposes "means that in all but the most top-down organisations people already bring in their own phones and iPads".

One way to control security is for people in network engineer jobs to focus on bandwidth management and possibly set up two separate wireless networks.

A recent poll by Damovo UK revealed that three-quarters of the IT CIOs surveyed believe the consumerisation of IT has been 'over-hyped'. However, 68 per cent did admit that increased use of mobile devices has led to greater worries about their business' IT security.
