Women getting ahead in technology

14/07/2008 A newspaper in the US has suggested that women are becoming more and more prominent in the technology industry.

USA Today says that now many females are taking up top positions within the sector and are responsible for running some of the country's biggest firms.

Speaking to a number of women, the paper found that many feel there are more opportunities than ten years ago because of the growth of the internet.

Marissa Mayer, vice president of search and user experience at Google, said: "Computer sciences and the internet have made technology tangible and put a face on them as careers for everyone, women included."

Heidi Roizen, who has founded several tech companies, added: "There are ever-increasing opportunities for women because there are ever-increasing opportunities.

"The more a company is pitched to women, the more opportunity there seems to be for women to lead these companies."

A number of technology firms, including Microsoft, claim to be committed to attracting more women to careers in the industry.

In 2004, Microsoft was named in a list of the 100 Best Companies for Working Mothers in Working Mother magazine.
