Graduate skills 'not used in workplace'

16/07/2008 British graduates feel that the skills they pick up at university are not being properly exploited in their jobs, according to a new study by the European Commission.

University World News reports that the problem, which affects technology careers to an extent, is most common among those with degrees in social sciences or humanities.

Although the report revealed that a quarter of graduates on the continent feel this way, the issue was also found to be more pronounced in the UK and southern Europe.

The biggest issues facing the graduate labour market were identified as increasing volatility of the labour process, increasing emphasis on education and increasing internationalisation, the study suggesting that graduates need greater flexibility and skills to meet these demands.

Meanwhile, a gender study by the EU's European Animal Disease Genomics Network of Excellence has indicated that diversity has not caught on in the area of scientific research and that women significantly lag behind men, particularly among the higher positions.
