Are employers and jobseekers on a different page?

22/02/2012 Are employers and jobseekers on a different page?When a candidate goes for an IT consultancy job or other role, they could be showing off skills not seen as a priority for employers.

According to research from learndirect, 88 per cent of employers rate workplace skills as a top priority in a candidate, but just ten per cent of jobseekers rate these skills highly.

The findings highlight the disparity between employers and candidates and could be one of the reasons why a quarter of jobseekers say they don't know how to make a good impression at interviews.

Basic workplace skills such as being able to come across well to people, working with others and blending in at work has led the training provider to call on jobseekers to brush up on their maths and IT skills and show confidence during interviews.

"Employers are looking for people who can fit in and get on with the job from the very start. They want people who can handle customers and give good service. They want people who can get on with colleagues, look presentable and turn up on time," explained Peter Shufflebotham, head of learning at learndirect.

Almost two-fifths of candidates said schools should prepare students better for the job market by introducing skills training.
