01/02/2012 Are smartphone apps extending office hours?App-ready technology that can be accessed from smartphones and tablets could be responsible for people working longer hours, it has been suggested.

Depending on the nature of a business, mobile devices and the apps on them means that many people will work in places that they previously couldn't, explained TV technology expert Ella Williamson and the BBC's Something for the Weekend's gadget guru.

However, she stressed that apps are opening up avenues for workers, such as being able to network on the go with LinkedIn.

"Twitter is being used increasingly in the workplace," Ms Williamson added, "a lot of companies have a Twitter handle and it's great for knowing what your competitors are doing and great for interacting."

Elsewhere, mobile apps allow employees to access information on the go through web browsing and mobile news sites, which could improve work performance.

Last week, The Boston Consulting Group predicted that the G20's internet economy will almost double by 2016, contributed by a rise in the use of mobile devices.
