Barbie 'could hold key to more women in IT'

14/01/2010 Barbie 'could hold key to more women in IT'Barbie could help to plant the seeds of IT careers in the minds of young girls, according to technology bloggers.

The pint-sized doll is set to have a new career, according to her makers Mattel, with one of the choices in the online consumer vote being a computer engineer.

This has attracted the attention of several IT commentators and professionals, including Microsoft's technical recruiter Janelle Godfrey, who writes regular posts for the company's JobsBlog.

Commenting on the news, technology blogger Matt Hitchcock said: "It may seem funny and insignificant but the IT industry has a lack of women joining the profession with female school leavers choosing not to pursue IT through college and higher education. Perhaps Barbie can change that mindset from an early age.

"The funny thing is, this might plant the seed for more women to enter the IT industry. I mean, give it a few years so that they stop playing with Barbie and finish their education but it plants the seed of an IT career in young girls and the industry could definitely use more balance."

Some other jobs that the doll has had include doctor, vet, model, and astronaut.
