Bletchley Park installs multi-media BBC Domesday project

08/12/2011 Bletchley Park installs multi-media BBC Domesday...The National Museum of Computing (TNMOC) at Bletchley Park is helping to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the BBC Domesday project by unveiling a new multi-media Touchtable. 

It allows up to four users to explore maps, pictures, videos and comments at the same time and is just one of three Touchtables that exist in the UK. It is a 52-inch multi-touch screen that uses pinch controls with on-board audio and high-spec graphics.

Opening the exhibit at the museum this week also marks the completion of the BBC's 2011 Domesday Reloaded project.

Back in 1986 and again this year, the project invited members of the public to send in images and information about their local area. Twenty-five years ago, the information was hosted on an Advanced Interactive Video System, while in 2011 contributors sent images and text via the internet.

Aerian Studios was responsible for the design, graphics and data collection of the modern-day project and helped to deliver the Touchtable after working with the BBC to extract the data held on the original Domesday laser discs so that it could be exposed through the BBC Domesday Reloaded.

"This new display is a marvellous addition to the museum where we tell the story of our digital heritage from the world’s first modern computer, Colossus, to the present day," commented Kevin Murrell, a director and trustee at TNMOC.

"The 1980s was a remarkable period for British computing and the 1986 BBC Domesday Project was a real landmark in education and a clear demonstration of the way information storage and handling was being transformed."
