Business start-ups struggling to find suitable employees

Entrepreneurs at the start-up stage of their business are finding it hard to find skilled workers for IT jobs and other roles, according to new research.

A survey from the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) and All Party Parliamentary Small Business Group has revealed that 27 per cent of small businesses are struggling to recruit suitable employees to help the company grow.

It was just one of the problems cited by small businesses, along with continuing difficulty in securing finance and too much regulatory requirements.

The survey has led the FSB to launch an inquiry into the situation facing entrepreneurs.

"Coming up against these at the very beginning of their entrepreneurial career can prevent [small businesses] from growing," explained John Walker, National Chairman of the FSB.

"With the private sector being relied on to drive economic recovery, these barriers need to be removed – budding entrepreneurs should be supported in setting-up in business, and existing businesses should be encouraged to innovate, take on staff and grow."

The organisation has called on the government to examine reinstating the graduate internship scheme to help students gain skills, as well as extend Work Trials to the first day a person sights on to Jobseekers Allowance.
