Campaign calls for more women in government

27/10/2011 Campaign calls for more women in governmentA new campaign has been launched this week to call on prime minister David Cameron to appoint more women to senior government roles. 

Counting Women In is being supported by a number of women's groups and other organisations and urges Mr Cameron to keep to his commitment to make a third of his ministers as women.

It comes as 18 months into the coalition's term just 20 of the 119 senior ministers are women, a representation of just 17 per cent.

"People have lost faith in our government's ability to represent them and this is no surprise when you see that Westminster is off-limits to over half the population," said Katie Ghose, chief executive of the Electoral Reform Society.

"The Counting Women In campaign will challenge the deadlock around the lack of women at the top table. For too long, politicians and political parties have been complacent in the face of such a starkly unrepresentative politics - we are determined to force action on this issue."

The UK now lags behind more than 40 countries for women's representation in politics.
