Career women 'must invest in pensions'

02/07/2009 Career women 'must invest in pensions'Women in employment should make sure that they contribute a small amount to their pension pot each month, an expert has advised.

Independent financial advisers Ruth Whitehead Associates claimed that professional women save less money compared to men because they earn less.

The company's director, Ruth Whitehead, explained that this did not mean women are relying on their partners for future financial security.

"I don't think women are relying nearly so much on men to save for anything, but it's still more likely they'll be earning less than their partners, and, tellingly, not working for so long in fulltime employment because they're at home looking after the children," she said.

"It's important to remember that trickling a small but affordable amount into a pension on a monthly basis is better than making no pension provision at all."

The comments come in response to a survey by Scottish Widows which found that just 47 per cent of women are saving for the future compared to 59 per cent of men,
