Children 'must recognise cyber-bullying'

09/02/2012 Children 'must recognise cyber-bullying'Children must learn to recognise when they are being cyber-bullied or when they are harassing others and know how to use online communication responsibly, the National Centre for Cyberstalking Research (NCCR) at the University of Bedfordshire has said.

It made the call to mark Safer Internet Day today earlier this week (February 7th) and Professor Carsten Maple, co-director at the NCCR, said that children in particular need to learn how to use the internet properly.

"They don't always know what is inappropriate," he suggested. "We need to train them so they recognise when they are causing harm or when they have gone too far."

He called for a change in the law to hand down appropriate punishment for people who harass others over the web.

The BBC's Panorama highlighted the issue this week, examining the effects of online harassment towards adults and children, often over social networks like Facebook and Twitter.
