26/08/2010 CIPD: Shortage of engineers and IT workers There is a major shortage of people with skills in engineering and IT, according to the latest labour market outlook survey by KPMG and the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD).

It revealed that nearly half (45 per cent) of the employers surveyed have reported difficulties in finding suitable candidates to fill vacancies.

Of these, engineering roles were the most hard to fill, with 21 per cent of employers reporting difficulty, followed by IT (18 per cent) and finance professionals (also 18 per cent).

This has led Gerwyn Davies, public policy adviser at the CIPD, to appeal to graduates and jobseekers to consider a career where the skills shortages lie.

However, he warned that there are greater challenges in finding a job from overseas competition.

To combat this, he advised people to continually update their skills.

"For instance, in IT it's not just a question of being proficient in IT, other skills such as business awareness will be required to give you the edge over your competitors," he added.
